Track Notes Maynard’s Classics 1995-2000
It’s so last century people!
CD1
1. The Grease Megamix- John Travolta/Olivia Newton
John
Re-released for the 20th anniversary of the movie in 1998, and it
charted again! The whole soundtrack in 3 minutes! Saves time and
is the perfect medley to mime with a loved one.
2. The Bad Touch- Bloodhound Gang
1999 Best publicity the Discovery Channel ever received. Film clip
shot in Paris for no apparent reason. Jimmy Pop from the band wrote
it when he was 16. From the “Hooray for Boobies!” album.
3. The Impression That I Get- Mighty Mighty Bosstones
1998 Ska crazy band formed in late 80’s. Lead singer Dicky
once was stabbed in the throat in a bar that contributes to his
rough vocals. Follow up was “Rascal King”
4. Your Woman- White Town
1997 White Town is Jyoti Mishra and he recorded this in his bedroom
in just 2 hours. He mustn't’t sleep much.
5. Wannabe- The Spice Girls
“If you wannabe my lover you gotta get with my friends”.
Strange advice from the girlpower band of the 90’s. My fave
was Ginger, strangest merchandise- girlpower g-string undies.
6. Mambo No.5- Lou Bega
1999Sampling most of Prez Prado’s original track of the same
name from the 50’s, Lou had a massive with this one. Lou loves
wearing those baggy pants.
7. Break My Stride- Unique II
1996 A cover of Mathew Wilder’s much slower version from 1984.
A song about moving up, moving on, and getting your laundry done.
8. Tubthumping- Chumbawamba
1997 Biggest hit by an anachosyndicist collective in this country.
(They usually don’t chart well) Great drinking song and much
respect to the band for encouraging Jarvis Cocker to run onstage
during Michael Jackson’s performance at the Brit Awards.
9. Steal My Sunshine- Len
1999 This summer classic borrows heavily from the
intro of the Andrea True Connections, “More More More”
from 1976. Sunshine, bike riding and disco. What more do you want
to finish off the century.
10. Spinning Around- Kylie Minogue
2000 Opening track of her “Light Years” album and the
song that launched Kylie’s bottom onto the international stage.
11. A Little Bit- Pandora
1998 Real name Anneli Pandora Magnusson, a Vegetarian from central
Sweden. Followed it up with “Smile ‘n Shine” in
99. She recently finished a “conscious breathing” course
and got a motorbike license.
12. Horny- Mousse T Featuring Hot N’ Juicy
1998 Real name Mustafa Gundogdu from the Peppermint Jam Label from
Hanover. Describes himself as a “DJ and trend scout”.
Nice work if you can get it. Followed up with “Sexbomb”.
13.Don’t Call Me Baby- Madison Avenue
1999 Madison Ave were Andy Van and trained dancer (they always come
in handy) Cheyne Coates. They were the first dance act to top the
charts here and in the UK. Like all good dance acts, they met each
other in a club. Their follow up was the equally demanding “Who
The Hell Are You?” from album “Polyester Embassy”.
14. We Like To Party (The Vengabus)- Vengaboys
1999 Pronounced “Bengaboys”. Formed by Spanish DJs Danski&
Delmundo they added Kim, Robin, Roy & Denice and toured Ibiza
beaches in a bus. Followed it up with “Boom, Boom ,Boom,Boom”
later in the year.
15. Blue (Da Ba Dee)- Eiffel 65
#1 from 1999. Written and recorded in an hour by Italian trio of
Jeffrey, Gabry & Maurizio. Their computer chose their name at
random and the song is about a character called Zorotl and the way
he lives life- blue. I'm not making this up people.
16. This Is How We Party - S.O.A.P.
1998 Heidi Sorenson and her younger sister Line from Denmark, had
a huge hit with this off their “Not Like Other Girls”
album. Probably helped by the fact they had the same manager as
The Spice Girls.
17. You Sexy Thing- T Shirt
1997 Released in the UK week of Princess Diana’s death and
sold virtually no copies at all. Did much better here, Chloe &
friends toured Australia and had a very good time indeed.
18. 5,6,7,8- Steps
1998 Claire, Ian, Lee, Lisa and Faye were produced by Pete Waterman
(of Stock, Aitken, etc) and he described their sound as “ABBA
on speed”, which might explain the group’s philosophy
of “life is always sunny in Stepsworld. They proved this by
supporting Britney Spears on her first tour. Had hits with “Last
Thing On My Mind” & “Tragedy”.
19. C’est La Vie- B*Witched
1998 Dublin girls Edele, Keavy, Sinead & Lindsay were given
that name by their producer, he found them “bewitching”
probably because of all that denim. They put that asterisk in there
to make the name stand out. Helps with copyright too.
20. Teenage Dirtbag- Wheatus
2000 Got their name from what they were called as kids. Only song
ever written that mentions anyone having two tickets to Iron Maiden.
Best loser anthem of all time.
21. Lemon Tree- Fools Garden
2000 Germans Peter, Thomas, Roland, Ralf and Volker did band and
dance versions of this track.
DISC TWO
1. I’m Outta Love- Anastascia
2000 Anastacia describes herself as “a freak” because
she doesn't look like she sounds, which is loud. from a showbiz
family, she used to sing along to Barbara Striesand records with
her mum. She has an Egyptian tattoo on the small of her back, ask
to see it next time you see her.
2. Lovefool- The Cardigans
1997 featuring Nina Persson on vocals & finger snapping. Swedish
band formed when members gave up playing heavy metal. This track
was used on the “Romeo & Juliet” soundtrack. From
their “First Band On The Moon” album. Nina said of this
song “I think I like almost all of our other songs better
than ‘Lovefool’’.
3. Silence- Delerium
1999 Delerium (Bill Leeb & Rhys Fulber) used Sarah McLachlan
on vocals. Original version came out in 1995. Leeb once said “I
hate England, it’s the curse of the world. Every three months
it saturates the world with something like the Spice Girls”.
He must have been having a bad day.
4. Pray- Tina Cousins
1998 Like all great dance artists she is a model/TV presenter/singer
from Finland, where somehow she found her way into a Rolling Stones
clip when she was 20. This was only her 3rd single after "Mysterious
Times" with Sash!, what is mysterious is what she's up too
these days.
5. If You Read My Mind- Stars On 54
1998 Used to promote the movie "54" about
the legendary Studio 54 disco in NYC, starring Mike Myers, Ryan
Phillippe, Neve Campbell and even Valerie Perrine who was often
seen at the original club anyway. The stars didn't do a lot of press
for the film due to a dispute in the way the film was finally edited.
The gay subplot was dropped and I don't think it turned out to be
the project they signed on for.
6. Groove Jet (if this ain't love)- Spiller
2000 That's the vocals of Sophie Ellis Baxtor,
adding her lyrics to what was originally a deep house instumental
from Italian DJ & producer Spiller on his "Miami"
EP. Sophie's best known for "Murder On The Dancefloor",
(perhaps you've heard it?) and being stick thin. She was in indie
UK band Theaudience and describes her sound as "sophisicated
pop" and says "whoever's on stage should look like they're
supposed to be on stage". She's a size 8 if you want to buy
her something.
